What is the Biggest Cybersecurity Threat Facing Small Businesses in Reno?

Today we’re talking with Scott Morris, IT Specialist for Reno Computer Services (RCS) about cybersecurity threats facing small businesses in our area. Scott, thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us.

Cybersecurity Threats

Scott explained that ransomware remains the biggest threat to small businesses. “It’s a constant battle,” he said, shaking his head. “Just last week we helped a local bakery recover from a ransomware attack. They lost critical data and had to pay a hefty ransom just to get their systems back online. It was devastating for them.”

Consequently, Scott emphasizes the importance of strong cybersecurity measures. “Small businesses often think they’re not a target,” he said, “but hackers see them as easy prey because they may lack robust security protocols.”

Data Security and Backup Solutions

We discussed how small businesses can protect themselves. Scott recommends a multi-layered approach that includes strong passwords, regular software updates, and employee training on identifying phishing attempts. “Moreover,” he added, “a reliable backup and disaster recovery solution is essential. If you do get hit with ransomware, you’ll be able to restore your data without paying the ransom.”

According to a recent study by the Ponemon Institute, 60% of small businesses that experienced a cyberattack went out of business within six months. “That’s a sobering statistic,” Scott said. “A good backup solution can literally be the difference between staying afloat and shutting down.”

Business Compliance

We also touched on business compliance, particularly HIPAA for healthcare providers and PCI DSS for businesses that handle credit card data. “Notwithstanding these regulations, many small businesses don’t realize they need to comply,” Scott explained. “Failing to do so can result in hefty fines and damage your reputation.”

“I remember working with a dental practice that had been storing patient records on an unsecured server,” he shared. “They were completely unaware of HIPAA requirements and the potential consequences. Luckily, we were able to help them get compliant before they faced any penalties.”

Accordingly, Scott recommends seeking professional guidance from IT specialists like RCS to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
